Davydenko ousted in Stuttgart

07/15/2010 - Stuttgart, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko came up a second-round loser Thursday at the Mercedes Cup tennis event.

Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver upended the speedy world No. 6 Russian star in 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 6-1 fashion on the red clay at TC Weissenhof. This marked Davydenko's first match of the week, after he received an opening-round bye.

Gimeno-Traver pulled off the upset in 2 hours, 12 minutes, with the help of 12 aces on Day 4. The 88th-ranked Spaniard had never beaten a top-10 player before Thursday (1-5).

Fourth-seeded former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero avoided an upset by overcoming Argentine Horacio Zeballos 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. The match was suspended because of darkness here on Wednesday, with the players knotted at 6-6 in the second set, but its was all Ferrero, a former French Open champion, here on Thursday.

Third-seeded Gael Monfils of France moved into the round of eight with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Spanish qualifier Pablo Andujar. Monfils and his fellow top-four seeds all received byes into the second round here.

Two other second-round bouts saw Swiss Marco Chiudinelli handle speedy German wild card Bjorn Phau 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and German Florian Mayer maul Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-1.

Friday's quarterfinals will pit second-seeded French Open semifinalist Jurgen Melzer of Austria against fifth-seeded Spaniard Albert Montanes; Monfils versus Mayer; the Spanish Ferrero against German Simon Greul; and Gimeno- Traver versus Chiudinelli.

Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year.No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. Maybe Chicago finds its way to .500... but then again, maybe it doesn't. If Favre comes back, Cutler might be the worst quarterback in this division this year.

Detroit Lions (+1500) - The Lions are probably once again going to be the whipping boys for the rest of the teams in the NFC North, but they aren't just going to roll over and die once again. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.
